The quality standard of silver and gold has been maintained by Goldsmiths Hall through the regulation and administration of 'Assay Office Hallmarks'. However, not only do these hallmarks us with assurance of quality, they also give us an invaluable insight into the history of the given piece and where it was made, and by whom. When it was made down to the precise year, and indeed at times, a reater insight into the piece such as what duty was paid on it depedant on the political climate at the time. No other aspect of antiques study or collecting has such a resource to refer to pinpointing the origins and history of a given piece. |
